SITE CHANGE!
Please note that we have changed the location of the Wilson Relay to Expoland in Fishersville.
The date has NOT changed. Due to construction at Wilson, we lost our parking area.
We also would be limited in where we could camp at other school sites.
The committee has inspected Expo and we believe this will be a positive change!

Site Updated 5/20/04

The Story Behind This Year's Theme!

You may be asking just what a Relay theme is? Relay themes are simple ideas or statements that let each participant join the event community in a festive way. There are as many themes as there are ideas. Some popular themes in our region have been: Relay Around the World, Hoedown on the Relay Farm, Relay for Hollywood  - you get the idea! Some Relay's don't choose a theme, but we like to!

In the past, the Relay theme was chosen by the committee and announced. Last year, after many suggestions, the committee chose three fun themes and put out voting bottles to determine the winner for this year's event. Many folks voted, with each penny counting as one vote. The money raised during theme voting went toward our event goal! Thanks to everyone who voted.

During the night - and I'm not sure exactly when - one of last year's teams decided to get creative and make their voice heard. They placed a fourth container on the voting table and marked it "Disney". Needless to say, the funds poured in. Staff could tell that the theme for Relay 2004 at the Wilson site would be related to "Disney".

There was just one small problem with the choice of "Disney" as a Relay theme. The American Cancer Society doesn't have permission to use another trademarked company's logos without their permission. And the committee was worried that we would move forward with a Disney theme and then have the plug pulled at the event by someone with Disney or ACS. So we started calling!

We called Disney many, many times. Martha was on the phone for days with Disney. We just couldn't get a definite answer! Without this permission, we thought we would have to make a committee decision to go with the runner-up theme. Then we had an idea. Could we create a theme that allowed each team to be Disney-oriented if they wished, but that would not implicate the event in copyright- or trademark infringement?

We knew we could. That's where the idea for this year's them came from. The Wonderful World of Relay. It can mean so many things! It was an instant hit with the committee. So make your campsites as creative as you wish. If you want to include cartoon or movie characters - go for it. If you want to interpret the theme differently - please do so! After all, there is a huge diversity of cancers and those who fight this disease. We can handle a little diversity in theme interpretation, I think!

Have a great time!

Relay Is Over - What Do I Do Now?

Just because the onsite event has ended for 2004, you don't have to put an end to your efforts! Why not make your Relay team a year-round club? That way, you won't have to scramble to raise money next Spring!

You can also volunteer at the ACS office in Harrisonburg. Or your local cancer center. AMC is building a cancer center, and Harrisonburg and Charlottesville already have facilities that could use the help.

Why not consider leading your team next year? If you start early and motivate your team, your job will be much easier.

The Event Committee for 2005 has vacancies!
There are many areas available for you to help. There is no event without a committee. If you have been a Team Leader and want a change, why not try it. Even if you have never been on a team at Relay, we could use your help. We will also need a new Webmaster next year! Plus you get to do fun things like decide on next year's theme!
Contact us if you can help!

The most important way you can help is to support everyone you know who is fighting cancer. Make them a meal, give them a ride or run their errands for them. You can make a difference in someone's quality of life!

After all, that's why we Relay!

Thank you.
